Keeping Your SaaS Product Consistent with Design Systems
Author, Johnson Oluwabukunola Enoch

Introduction
Good design isn’t just creativity, it’s also about psychology and how people naturally interact with products. Here are five of many proven principles that shape great user experiences:
1. Jakob’s LawUsers spend most of their time on other websites, not yours. This means they expect your site to work like the ones they already know. If your navigation feels familiar, people feel at home faster.
2. Hick’s LawThe more choices you give, the longer it takes for users to decide. Too many buttons, links, or menus create confusion. Simplify options, and people will take action quicker.
3. Reading PatternsPeople don’t read websites word-for-word, they scan. Common patterns include the F-shape (used for text-heavy pages) and the Z-shape (great for landing pages). Knowing this helps you place content where eyes naturally go.
4. The Von Restorff EffectAlso called the “isolation effect.” Items that stand out are easier to remember. Highlighting a key button (like a signup CTA) with a different color or size makes it more likely to get noticed.
5. The Law of ProximityThings placed close together are seen as related. This is why grouping form fields, menu items, or dashboard metrics makes interfaces feel more organized and easier
In conclusion
Design systems bring structure and consistency to SaaS products by unifying visuals, components, and interactions. They eliminate design guesswork, streamline collaboration between teams, and create a smooth, trustworthy experience for users, ensuring the brand stays cohesive as it scales.
“A strong design system isn’t just about consistency, it’s about building trust through familiarity.”
